A passion for fashion – The Maureen Schmitzer Story
Affectionately known as ‘Maurs’ to most customers, friends and family

Maurs’ newfound skill started at the beginning of 2004 when she was attending a classical music concert, combined as a fashion parade of designer clothes based in Townsville, North Queensland, in a fabulous venue on the slopes of Castle Hill overlooking the city below. There were many prizes on the day, and she won two! The first prize she won was for a competition amongst all tables and it was to create the best item to wear from the bits and pieces on the table – so she put together all the twine, lolly wrappers, pins, pieces of material, beads – just all sorts of items found within a hands reach.

Next, she won the lucky door prize – and no, no, it wasn’t a door, it was a $50 voucher at the designer’s boutique of the fashion parade. Well, what would she do with a $2,000 gown in Townsville – so she went to the designer for advice and the designer informed her she held hat making classes – now, this class cost her many hundreds of dollars on top of her $50 prize but, well, it changed her life!!! Maureen would never have undertaken this course otherwise.

And it was a fabulous red hat, that changed her life…

After many weeks thereafter she created the most beautiful extravaganza – a fabulous red hat with a turned-up brim, brimming with feathers. Maureen found her life changing as she donned her prized hat creation – she attended the horse races (not that she saw any horses) but entered the ‘Fashions of the Field’ an annual event held in her local town. Maureen not only won that day, but the next few events on the racing calendar that she attended, she won many prizes and got into the top 10 finals with this wonderful red hat and also won best hat at one racing event!

Award winning fashion hats

As Maureen ventured further afield she, voyaged on a cruise ship from Sydney to Melbourne to attend the famous Australian race meeting – the Melbourne Cup. At this event Maureen resurrected a bright pink hat with a teal blue fascinator and wore it with a Thai silk pink and teal blue suit. She didn’t make the final in the Melbourne Cup Fashions but was interviewed by the Melbourne Herald and her hat story was published the very next day.

“Well, the creative side came out then as I won the prize for making a matching tiara and necklace.
I think I won a “hairdo” for that effort”

Then, off to the Kyneton Racing Club – a big event in the Spring Racing Carnival and again her splendiferous red hat was runner up. She was thrilled about this win, as there were some lovely hats by some famous milliners at the event.

The birth of Fashion Fascinators

Maureen branched out into making Fashion Fascinators as she realised from the reaction of friends and associates that there was a market available for her custom designs.

Firstly, she just created for friends, then set up in marketplaces, and eventually her home based industry became in such high demand that now, she has ladies knocking on her door, turning up in leaps and bounds, with their outfits, shoes and jewellery, and she just “makes them something” even if she doesn’t have something in stock which suits.

So you can see the rest is history, a love for creative designs and an ongoing passion for fashion was born!

Fabulous Fashion Fascinators available in standard range or custom designs

Maureen offers many standard design fascinators that are available in stock, and these can be viewed in our fascinator gallery, but she can also create Fashion Fascinators in individual styles or colours.

With a delightful range of fabrics, feathers and flowers for adornments, the fabric can be dyed or spray painted to allow for the correct colour, and has a never ending supply of feathers in all shapes, sizes, and colours.

Maureen is one of the lucky few to have travelled the world extensively and so is always looking for different feathers and “bits” to bring home for a range of creations that will last the test of time.

Someone who has purchased a Fashion Fascinator by Maurs may live in England or New York City and be resplendent with a feather which she found in Copenhagen, Denmark - a truly international flavour.
